As you’ve heard me say time and again, sufficient protein intake is critical for improving your physique, performance, and overall health. In fact, I recommend getting in a solid 1 - 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day, and at least 40 grams of protein at meals.
For this reason, Iso JYM is a go-to supplement for everyday use. It delivers the most protein per calorie when compared to protein powders that use protein concentrates or milk protein isolates, and it’s perfect to help meet your macros on protein without going over on carbs and fats.
Iso JYM contains 20 grams of pure Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) per scoop. WPI is a purer form of whey protein than the cheaper whey protein concentrate you see in most protein powders. The WPI in Iso JYM goes through a specific microfiltration process that removes lactose and doesn’t harm the small protein molecules from the whey. The result is a whey product with a protein concentration of 90% or more for maximum uptake and digestibility.
Just as important as what’s in Iso JYM is what’s not in it. Iso JYM contains no fat, no added sugar, only 1-2 grams of total carbs, NO LACTOSE. You’re getting 20 grams of the highest-quality whey protein with only 90 total calories. It’s the ultimate clean protein!
You’ve heard me say time again that whey protein on its own absorbs too rapidly to maximize muscle protein synthesis (and muscle growth) around workouts, and instead you need a blend of fast-, medium-, and slow-digesting proteins like whey, egg, and casein (respectively). This is the reason I created my Pro JYM protein blend – to maximize performance and recovery around workouts for better results. But that’s not to say that you can’t use pure whey around workouts, as well as other times of day, to maximize your protein intake at meals and throughout the course of the day.
Both the benefit and the problem with whey is that it's digested, absorbed and used by the muscles very quickly. This is good around workouts, because we want those amino acids to get to the muscles as soon was possible for energy during the workout and recovery afterward. This creates a big increase in muscle protein synthesis (MPS), which is how muscle grows. Plus, whey is rich in BCAAs, which are the most critical for turning on MPS.
The downfall of this speed is that the spike in MPS caused by whey is very short-lived. Almost as quickly as MPS is increased, it starts to drop. By two hours or so later, the spike in MPS is gone, and the processes of muscle building stops.
There are two remedies for this dramatic but short-lived spike in MPS. The first is to eat more frequently. If using a whey-only product like Iso JYM to get your protein, make sure that your next meal does not come much later than 2 hours after the whey protein. This will allow you to create more spikes in MPS through the day, which will help you pack on extra muscle mass.
For example, if you had Iso JYM as your pre-workout protein source, make sure your post-workout shake (whether Iso JYM or Pro JYM) comes no more than 2 hours later. This is typically not a problem, since few workouts run 2 hours long. If you followed your workout with Iso JYM as your post-workout protein, again, simply make sure that your next meal (shake or whole food) comes no more than 2 hours later.
The other option is to have Iso JYM with a whole-food, slow-digesting protein source, like dairy (cheese, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt or Skir, milk, etc), beef, poultry, fish, or pork.
Many people have special dietary needs that don’t allow for a protein blend. Some people are allergic to egg protein. I myself was recently diagnosed with a severe egg allergy, so Pro JYM is no longer an option for me. I need to get my proteins separate, so Iso JYM is now my protein powder of choice.
Some are ovo-vegetarian (meaning they eat eggs but not dairy products), and some don’t want casein because it sits longer in the digestive tract, and makes them feel fuller and bloated. This can make it difficult to eat enough to gain appreciable muscle. Here a whey protein, like Iso JYM is a better option.
I also wanted to offer protein flavor options that were different than the standard chocolate and vanilla (which I love, by the way). I’ve always liked the thought of a protein shake that’s light and refreshing like a sports drink, but without the sugar. ISO JYM fills that gap in the market – as I said above, it’s a refreshing drink for building a lean, muscular physique!

Use Iso JYM the same way you would any other protein powder. It’s a great protein source first thing in the morning, with meals, between meals, or around workouts.

For example, have Iso JYM pre-workout and at other meals to conveniently bump up protein intake. Then, use Pro JYM post-workout and before bedtime for a longer-lasting bump in MPS.
And feel free to alternate between Iso JYM and Pro JYM however you want. If you’re in the mood for a light, fruit-flavored protein drink, choose Iso JYM. When you want something creamier that tastes more like a milkshake, go with Pro JYM.
