The Smith Machine Can Help You Focus Better on Your Pecs

The Smith machine is one piece of equipment that I like to use. But then again, I am a firm believer in using all of the tools that you have available in your gym. And new research shows one specific benefit of the Smith machine when it comes to training your chest. California State University (Fullerton) researchers measured the muscle activity of subjects' middle deltoids, front deltoids and the pectoralis major (pecs or chest) muscles when subjects performed the bench press with a free-weight barbell or on the Smith machine. They reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research that there was not much difference between the muscle activity of the pecs.
