The Smith machine is a great training tool – provided it's used in moderation.
That's because it offers numerous benefits. One way I like to use the Smith is to train explosively, such as with bench press throws or curl throws. Plus, you can do novel exercises on the Smith, like my Smith machine lateral raise for the delts or weighted hip thrusts for the lower abs (I'll do a video on this exercise soon!). Research has even shown that you can squat heavier on the Smith machine than you can with free weights.
